A Social Client That Is an RSS Reader

With the v5 API being designed the way it’s going, any social client is going to essentially be an RSS reader. People will be able to subscribe to any feed and have it appear in their timelines. As a result, there will need to be a mechanism to collect these feeds and present them properly. Exporting an OPML file will also be required should a person choose to use a different client that handles RSS feeds better.

So if the social client is an RSS reader, and people are able to choose the types of posts they see from people they follow, is this the future of social? Is the RSS reader about to make a comeback in the Indieweb world as a one-stop tool that can do it all? Should I look at building a cross-platform RSS reader when the core API is ready to go?
